Description

Vintage oil painting on linen after the famous 1785–1786 masterpiece Lavinia Bingham, Countess Spencer by the celebrated English portraitist Sir Joshua Reynolds.

The painting depicts Lavinia Spencer (née Bingham), Countess Spencer (1762–1831). She was a prominent 18th-century Irish-born aristocrat, society hostess, and wife of George Spencer, 2nd Earl Spencer. She is famously captured in 18th-century country dress, featuring a wide-brimmed straw hat with a bold green ribbon band and a white frilled gown. This casual style was popularized in British portraiture to signify effortless elegance and a connection to nature.

Sir Joshua Reynolds was the first president of the Royal Academy and a master of the Grand Style of painting, which elevated contemporary sitters with classical composition elements. The original painting by Reynolds resides in the private Spencer family collection at their ancestral home, Althorp House in Northamptonshire.
