Description

Early 19th Century American primitive pewter hutch or china cupboard. 2 piece design made from oak with two shelves along the top. The base has two hand dovetailed drawers over a lower two door latched cabinet with shelf. Made using hand cut nails with some mortise and tenon joinery.

Pewter is an alloy composed primarily of tin, with varying amounts of lead, copper, antimony, and bismuth. It has been used for the production of household and other items since 1300 B.C. During the 17th and 18th-centuries, pewter became very popular among Europeans. It was found in every home. In Colonial America, pewter became fashionable among the wealthy and middle-class households by the early-18th-centuries. Pennsylvanian Dutch would often prominently display the family's pewter collection, usually in a large pewter cupboard. A typical pewter cupboard was made of two parts. It featured a base consisting of two or more cabinets and an upper unit comprising step-back open shelves held together with wooden boarded back.
