Description
Vintage 1998 Betty Anglin Smith original oil painting on canvas titled Ashepoo Marshland. A vibrant landscape featuring a low-lying, waterlogged wetland dominated by grasses, reeds, rushes, trees and sedges.
A native of the South, Betty Anglin Smith is active in the community of Charleston SC, where she is known as a painter of Lowcountry scenes using a technique of large brush strokes and bold, vibrant colors. Her focus is expansive marsh vistas, beaches and waterways that are an integral part of the Lowcountry landscape with its mile-upon-mile of flat marshland - a challenge to her as an artist because it is a world seemingly void of the diagonal lines that artists use to balance a painting and add depth.
She has discovered that lines were to be found in the colorful shifting clouds and meandering creeks. Using large brushstrokes and eye-catching colors, Smith has worked to capture not just the physical nature of a place, but the feeling as well. Her goal with her paintings is to give the viewer a sense of the immediacy of the moment.
Smith began her painting career well into her adult years. Following the birth of her three children, who are triplets, she enrolled in art classes at the Gibbes Museum of Art in downtown Charleston.
Her triplets are also painters, and each bring a unique perspective to the family legacy. Jennifer Smith Rogers, with a background in architecture from Clemson University, creates striking oil paintings that highlight the interplay between structures and sky. Shannon Smith Hughes, also working in oils, masterfully captures the effects of light in her compositions. Meanwhile, Tripp Smith translates the beauty of the Lowcountry into breathtaking fine art photography.
Painting by Betty Anglin Smith are in corporate collections including Walt Disney World, IBM, and Johnson and Johnson.
