Description
Vintage wicker / rattan Swiss alphorn, a traditional Swiss musical instrument. It is a lip-reed wind instrument, similar to a brass instrument, played by buzzing the lips into a cup-shaped mouthpiece. Traditionally made from solid softwood, such as spruce or pine, it has a conical bore and large ones can measure between 9.8 and 13 feet long. The instrument has no valves and produces notes through lip tension and breath pressure, allowing for a range of several octaves. Historically, it was used by mountain dwellers and shepherds in Switzerland and surrounding regions as a means of communication across valleys.
