Description

Fine American Empire parlor sofa / couch with classical form and masterful carvings. Made of flamed mahogany featuring carved back crest and flared rolled arms accented with carved foliate and acanthus designs, supported by heavily carved monopodium hairy paw feet with cornucopias. Includes two lumbar boulster pillows.

The American Empire style is an interpretation of the French Empire style, which was popular in Europe from 1800–1815. American furniture makers were inspired by the French Empire style and adapted it to the tastes of American consumers.

The American Empire period lasted from 1800–1840. The style is considered heavy and dark, and reflects Greek and Roman architectural motifs. It's characterized by curved arms, cabriole legs, and ornate, paw or claw feet.
