"Hans-Wolff von Ponickau came from the old Saxon-Meissen noble family of the von Ponickau. He studied agriculture at the University of Bonn. In 1922 he became a member of the Corps Rhenania Bonn. In 1923 he completed his studies as a graduate farmer. He then studied painting as a pupil of Josef Eberz at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and from 1925 to 1929 as a pupil of Johann Vincenz Cissarz, Hans Leistikow and Franz Karl at the Städelschule Frankfurt. In 1943, a sheet of his was exhibited at the Great German Art Exhibition. As a painter and graphic artist, von Ponickau worked in Göttingen, Frankfurt am Main, Tecklenburg and most recently Münster. He belonged to the Freie Künstlergemeinschaft Schanze. He illustrated numerous children's books from 1930 through the 1950s, designed artists' postcards and bookplates and worked as a landscape painter.
