Antique John Edwards Imperial Poppies Gold Porcelain Oval Serving Platter 12"

Description

Antique 1890's oval porcelain serving platter by John Edwards. Lightly scalloped Imperial design with black transfer Poppies pattern with hand painted gold accents. Stamped with logo and registration mark Rd. 172136 (design registered in 1891). Impressed with T595, a star, Imperial and registration mark Rd. 153150 (design registered in 1890).

"John Edwards was a china & earthenware manufacturer at Longton and then King Street, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, England in the late 19th century. John Edwards operated a factory in Longton begeinning circa 1847 and around 1850 moved to the King Street Works in the adjacent town of Fenton. China and earthenware was produced until 1856 when only earthenware was made. In 1861 the business employed 170 people. At some time John Edwards was in partnership with James Edwards (relationship uncertain), James left the partnership in January 1865. Between 1873 and 1879/1880 "& Co" was included in the name. From about 1880-1900 the name reverted to simply John Edwards. A significant part of the output was semi-porcelain and white granite for the American markets." (Source: The Potteries)
