Description

Vintage Decter Vaudeville female display mannequin fashion doll in a sexy reclining position.

Vaudeville Mannequins features Decter products. Decter was founded in 1924, and is one of the most established mannequin and display companies in America. A Decter mannequin usually starts as a designer's conceptual sketch, and quickly moves to a photo shoot with real models. Shown above is Michal, the model for many of the poses in the "Arriveste" collection.

Models are photographed from all angles for each particular pose, and those photos become the starting point for the sculptor. Working in clay with a metal armature underneath, the sculptor concentrates on the body-hands are usually added later. Because heads are made to be interchangeable from one pose to another, the head is sculpted separately.

Once the clay sculpture is complete, it is carefully cut into sections-torso, legs, and arms-and initial molds are made in plaster. Later, production molds will be created from much more durable materials. Using the production molds, the mannequin itself is cast using high quality, hand-laid fiberglass sheets and resins.

After being removed from the molds, the mannequin parts are carefully sanded and the chosen head is attached to the torso. Multiple base and finish coats of paint are applied-much like a fine automobile or speedboat. Faces are painted one at a time by artists. Eyes, lips, and make-up are created with oil paints, using a combination of airbrush and hand brush techniques.

Decter mannequins are designed and produced in California. While styles certainly change, the basic composition of Decter mannequins has not changed appreciably since the 1960's – heavy, high-quality, and substantial mannequins and forms, designed to last.
