Description

Vintage decorative doll / figurine depicting an old man / diety character from Japanese Noh Theatre. The mask appears to be a Hakushiki-jo / Okina style with benign expression, the suggestion of a movable jaw, long beard, and pom pom shaped eyebrows. “Hakushiki-jō was born before Noh in its original forms of sarugaku or dengaku, and used in prayers and celebrations. It has a soft smile of the deity symbolizing the country and the world at peace, bountiful harvests, long lives, and prosperity of the current and the future generations.” “Okina, comes from an old Japanese word for an old man. Usually an Okina mask has a relatively calm expression. The mask features distinctive bushy eyebrows. It is in two parts with a separated jaw. It is also referred to as kami no men 神の面 meaning “mask of god” and is considered sacred.” The doll is constructed of painted, unglazed porcelain / bisque head, mask, and hands. The body is in a set pose sumptuously dressed in a voluminous gold kimono / robe and purple pants. Its is attached to a simple wooden stand /stage.
