Description

Antique French portrait oil painting on board of 27 year old Swiss Sergeant Heinrich Blumer. Painted in Paris during the 1830 July Revolution that brought Louis-Philippe to the throne of France. It shows the young man dressed in a Napoleonic style military uniform posing next to his ornate Shako cap. Painted by German artist, circa 1830. Heinrich Blumer, Sergeant within the 8th royal guard regiment from Besenval (today's Switzerland area in the canton of Solothurn) under Carl the 10th in France, Drawn in Paris 1830, at age 27. He was back then a resident of Switzerland. The first 6 out of 8 regiments of the royal guards (in French: Garde Royale) consisted of elite soldiers of the French infantry. 2 out of 8 regiments (the 7th regiment and 8th regiment) were foreign regiments consisting of Swiss soldiers.

Provenance:
Estate of J. Frederic Gagel, owner of multiple Thoroughbred race horses that competed in the Narragansett Special and Kentucky Derby. Their family heritage was strongly intertwined with the military having officers in battles dating back to the American Revolution.

Condition

Fair condition, wear and distressing commensurate with age and use, splitting to board and frame, crazing, distressing, markings to verso.
