Description

An impressive set of 8 Charles II or Carolean style dining chairs made in Okinawa Japan, circa 1970s. Hand crafted from oak with an oval upholstered back centered between turned stiles and surround by beautiful filigree carvings that are matched along the front strecher of each chair. Upholstery is original with a green leafy design. The fabric is still wrapped in the original plastic which could always be removed.

Charles II (1660-1685) and his court had spent years in exile in the fashionable centres of France and Holland and had learnt to admire the styles of furniture. On their return to their homeland they transplanted French and Dutch baroque tastes to London and English furniture. Elaborate furniture of the European continent, particularly that belonging to the Louis XIV Baroque style, spread into the homes of wealthy Londoners. The pieces were veneered, gilded, marquetry-inlaid and lacquered. However, in provincial areas of England, country furniture continued being made of oak in the semi-Gothic Jacobean styles.

Condition

Good Vintage Condition; some the protective covering on the chair seats is split or torn in a few spots.
