Description
Plan Immortal by Craig Lloyd 1986. A mixed media featuring wood and oil on canvas. The work included here is representative of the current direction of Craig's paintings. It is a recent stage of a continuum that began in his undergraduate studies where he was fortunate to be able to paint directly from nature. While his career has taken him through various phases during which he incorporated constructed elements and mixed media, he has always included landscape as an element. Thematically, his imagery is intended to suggest the finite quality of the natural environment.
Craigs working method involves studies from nature with larger compositions, produced in the studio. He also works in the field during the summer months and prefers the tactile sensations of painting with oil on canvas. He is interested in composition and light as elements to be manipulated in order to depict the mood of the setting.
Craig has a basic human need to experience vast space and natural phenomena. He pauses to take it in when the moment strikes him. Light, color, atmosphere and the season are all part of what has stopped him at these places and times.
But open space is also a commodity. The images he has created are from locations that captured his attention; some are gone already while others remain for now. He uses an approach that has its roots in the 19th century but is seen through the viewpoint of today's altered landscape.
