Description

Impressive Japanese Export Art Nouveau Sideboard. Meiji Period c.1880-1912. Meticulously carved from rosewood with high relief detail. At the center is an open space for display and storage. The drawer can be seen above with the face of a dragon flanked by two cabinets framed in floral carving. There are six figural carved dragons along the face and side of the cabinet. Each is shown in full scope with scrolling detail. In Japanese culture these dragons are considered guardians; a symbol of strength, ferocity and wealth. This theme is continued into the back-splash, which is the most monumental addition to this piece spanning its entire width. Here two dragons are seen scrolling through the clouds as they meet facing each other at the center. The top surface is smooth for serving with a Greek key trim. Lower apron is finished with three additional dragon faces amongst a floral motif. The six feet are five toed and surrounded by cloud carvings. The dragon which is the defender of Buddha and Buddhism makes an elaborate and clear mark on this sideboard. A one of a kind piece that will have an amazing presence in any setting.
