Description
Vintage Royal Doulton 6785 porcelain character jug pitcher of Rip Van Winkle from Washington Irving's classic American folklore story. Hand-painted glazed earthenware depicting an elderly bearded man in a dark hat, with a handle shaped like a tree branch featuring a small bird and a seated figure. Circa 1987, from the Characters from Literature series.
In the story, Rip Van Winkle is an amiable but deeply lazy Dutch-American villager living in New York's Catskill Mountains. To escape his nagging wife, he wanders into the mountains one day, encounters mysterious, ghostly settlers playing nine-pins, and drinks their magical liquor.
He falls into a deep sleep and wakes up 20 years later as an old man with a long gray beard, completely unaware of the time that has passed. When he returns to his village, he discovers everything has changed: his wife has passed away, his children are grown, and the American Revolution has taken place, turning him from a British subject of King George III into a citizen of a free United States
