Description

Vintage Royal Doulton 5615 porcelain character jug pitcher of The Vicar of Bray. Depicts a winking, smiling figure wearing a brown tricorn hat, gray hair, a green coat, and a blue-and-white patterned vest/cravat. Designed by Charles Noke and Henry Fenton, and produced in England by Royal Doulton. Issued from 1936 to 1960.

Satirical character from an iconic 18th-century English satirical song of the same name. The song tells the story of an adaptable clergyman holding office at Bray, Berkshire. He manages to retain his ecclesiastical post and stay in power over several decades by constantly shifting his allegiances, principles, and religious doctrines to match whichever monarch is currently on the British throne toggling seamlessly between diverse political regimes and religious factions from Charles II through George I. The winking expression on the jug reflects his famously shrewd, flexible, and cynical approach to survival and self-preservation.
