Description

This magnificent 19th-century Grand Manner revival portrait depicts Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle (1693–1768), which was originally painted by William Hoare of Bath (c. 1707–1792). A prominent Whig statesman who served twice as the Prime Minister of Great Britain. Seated regally in a high-backed, plushly upholstered armchair, the Duke is portrayed with an air of noble composure and stately authority. He is depicted with refined facial features, an intense gaze, and a powdered white periwig typical of the courtly elite. His attire is exceptionally lavish, highlighting a delicate white lace cravat at his throat, crisp white breeches secured with knee bands, and a prominent crimson ceremonial sash draped diagonally across his torso alongside a heavy, metallic order collar chain.

The portrait captures him in the full ceremonial regalia of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, the oldest and most prestigious chivalric order in the United Kingdom. His flowing silk and deep cerulean blue velvet robes drape dramatically across his seat, meticulously detailed on the left shoulder mantle with the Garter badge enclosing the Cross of St. George, inscribed with the famous Old French motto, "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE" ("Shame on him who thinks evil of it"). The iconic blue and gold garter band is buckled precisely below his left knee, painted with the motto's opening lettering, while the intricate gold collar chain carries the detailed "Greater George" pendant depicting St. George on horseback slaying the dragon.

The rest of the canvas unfolds into a dramatic, theatrical setting characteristic of European Baroque portraiture. Behind the Duke's voluminous, masterfully rendered silver-white silk garments sits a dark stone architectural background. To the left, cold stone columns cast a shadowy, imposing mood, while a stone plinth to the right supports a massive, elaborate commander's helmet adorned with cascading black and white ostrich plumes. Beyond this military allegory, a bright patch of sky filled with soft, sunlit clouds breaks through the atmospheric shadows, creating a luminous contrast that accentuates the powerful, regal presentation of the subject.

The oil painting is housed in a substantial, period-correct molded giltwood frame featuring a classic beaded inner border and egg-and-dart motif, the reverse side reveals an unlined, naturally aged linen canvas over a hand-built wooden stretcher frame with mitered diagonal corner keys.

Fair; some warping to canvas; a few gouges/repairs. Staining, lower corners of canvas cloudy.
