Description
Antique etching created by the American painter and printmaker Edith Penman (1860–1929). A coastal maritime landscape rendered in fine graphic detail. It features a small beached or grounded rowboat propped up on a grassy shore in the left foreground. Across the foggy stretch of water in the background rests a large sailboat / tall masted fishing boats docked at the harbor for processing. Brown metal frame; white and brown layered mat.
Known for her landscapes, floral paintings, and involvement with the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts colony, Penman produced several notable fine-line harbor and pastoral etchings during the late 19th century. Location: New York, Hudson.
Born in London, England, Penman moved to the United States and studied art under prominent artists Robert Swain Gifford and Henry Bayley Snell. She was highly active in the late 19th and early 20th-century art scene, serving for many years as the treasurer of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors. Her works are currently preserved in major permanent collections, including the National Gallery of Art and the Parrish Art Museum.
