Description

Vintage Guna Kuna mola textile panel and skirt - a form of traditional hand-sewn folk art from Panama and Colombia regions. Molas are made by the indigenous Guna women, originally as panels for their everyday blouses. They are created using a reverse appliqué technique, layering different colored fabrics and cutting away sections to reveal the colors underneath. The designs often feature elements from nature, such as plants, animals (like the bird, butterfly, and snakes seen here), and traditional geometric patterns.

The textile features a butterfly, a bird, and a caduceus style medical snake / serpent wrapped around a wand or dagger. The skirt features lions, cats, a bird, squirrel and bat .
