Description

Mid to late 20th century Independence Ironstone white porcelain teapot / coffee pot by Castleton China Inc. Federal / early American inspired faceted style with a tall tapered body and angular handle.

"In 1939, Louis L. Hellerman, a former American representative for Rosenthal China, approached Shenango with a proposal to replicate Rosenthal shapes and patterns. Castleton China, incorporated in May 1940 in New York, was the result. Hellerman maintained the majority of the stock and controlled sales. In 1951, Shenango purchased Hellerman’s stock and assumed full control. Hellerman engaged the services of some of America’s leading industrial designers. Eva Zeisel designed Castleton’s Museum shape line, encouraged in her efforts by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Ervin Kalla redesigned some of the Museum shapes in 1956. In 1955, Castleton worked with Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower, to create a new formal design for the White House State Dining Room china. Craig McBurney was the designer. Castleton also designed a Pennsylvania Dutch pattern to celebrate President Eisenhower’s first birthday in the White House and dinnerware for “The Columbine,” President Eisenhower’s plane. In 1968, President Johnson commissioned Tiffany and Shenango to create a new White House dinnerware service. Shenango ceased production of the Castleton brand in 1974." (Worthpoint)
