Description
Prohibition era Reed & Barton, number 25, 64 oz silverplated milk can shaped cocktail shaker / pitcher. Trophy engraving "F.E.W. Gashouse Gang #2 Salem 1971." - presumably a club from the Salem Avenue area in Dayton Ohio.
"Reed & Barton was originally founded as Babbitt & Crossman in Taunton, Massachusetts, in 1824. Babbitt & Crossman, which produced the first Britannia ware in the United States, was first owned by Isaac Babbitt and William Ware Crossman. The name Babbitt, Crossman & Company was used until 1829 when Crossman left to join another partnership. The company was slowly losing money, so the failing company was eventually purchased by Henry G. Reed and business partner Charles E. Barton. Babbitt moved to Boston in 1834 and by 1837 the company was known as Reed & Barton. During the American Civil War, Reed & Barton produced a considerable quantity of weapons for Union Army soldiers and officers. In 1928, Reed & Barton merged with silversmith Dominick & Haff. For decades the company remained privately owned by the family of Henry Reed. Besides silverplate and sterling silver flatware, Reed & Barton operated other brands as well: Reed & Barton Handcrafted Chests, the world's largest manufacturer of handmade chests, cigar humidors, pen chests, and hardwood flatware; Miller Rogaska Crystal, handmade stemware; Sheffield Collection, a company started in 1908 and purchased by Reed & Barton in 1973; everyday stainless steel flatware designed for durability (and modern conveniences like dishwashers). It is also the exclusive American importer of Belleek Fine Parian China and Aynsley Fine English Bone China Tableware. Reed & Barton filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2015 and was acquired by The Lenox Company." (Source: Wikipedia / American Silversmiths / 925-1000)
