1930s W. A. Berkey American Chippendale Style Corner Cabinet. A replica of a piece exhibited in George Washington's Mount Vernon House that was awarded Gold Prize at the International Colonial Exposition in Paris in 1931. Features a mahogany frame with a carved open pediment crown flanked by trophy finials. The display portion has two glass fretwork covered doors and opens to two fixed shelves. Beneath the display are two crotch mahogany beveled wood doors that open to additional storage. The cabinet is supported by bracket feet. Paris award tag is fixed to the lower surface of interior.
William Adam Berkey (1860-1928) was a furniture manufacturer who founded the William A. Berkey Furniture Co. in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The company, which later became part of Berkey & Gay Furniture Co., was known for producing high-quality furniture and was a significant contributor to Grand Rapids' reputation as "Furniture City". The company was eventually purchased and ceased operations as a separate division in 1976.
