Primitive Antique American country farmhouse sugar chest / mule chest / blanket trunk featuring a hinged top with lower cabinet. Mule chests were popular in England and colonial America in the 17th century. They were often the only case piece of furniture in Colonial homes. Mule Chests were a form of Coffer, built using old clout nails and wooden pegs. This design solved the problem of difficult to reach items stored at the bottom of a trunk.
