Description

A very large and impressive floral still life oil painting after Marie de Bievre. It features a bouquet of flowers / Peonies in large urn / vase surrounded by rhododendrons.

Marie de Bièvre was born in Sint-Joost-ten-Node in 1865 in Belgium. She attended the local art school and later moved to Brussels, where she lived in a home at the Rue de Livourne. In 1883, she helped to found the Circle of Belgian Watercolorists and Aquafortists (Cercle des Aquarellistes Aquafortistes et des Belges), of which the Belgian-born artist Alfred William Finch (1854-1930) was a also member. De Bièvre went on to found a group of artists named Voorwaerts in 1885, and the Circle of Women Painters (Cercle des Femmes Peintres) in 1888, which petered out some time after its fourth exhibition in 1893. She exhibited in the 1893 at the World Exposition in Chicago, the 1894 Expo Universelle in Antwerp and the Paris World Fair of 1900. Her work was shown at the Munich Exhibition of 1905 in Germany and the Ghent Salon and Brussels Salon of 1902 and 1907 in Belgium.

Condition

Good antique condition, wear and distressing commensurate with age and use, creasing to canvas, crazing, marking / finish loss / cracking to frame.
