Description

Monumental rare antique hand carved marble Buddhist Shakyamuni Triad sculpture. The Shaka Triad was one of the earliest significant examples of a Buddhist sculpture in Japan. It was crafted from bronze and created during the Asuka period around 623 CE. This beautiful example is meticulously carved from marble and features a central rear figure of Shaka with lotus flower (also known as Shakyamuni Buddha), flanked by the Bodhisattvas Manjushri (Monju) and Samantabhadra (Fugen), who are shown as charming, childlike figures astride their respective animal vehicles. On the viewer’s right sits Manjushri the Bodhisattva of Wisdom with attenuated scepter. Along the left is Samantabhadra, the Bodhisattva of Benevolence, in a position of royal ease. Each of the spiritual leaders is shown in both a childlike figure and larger modern seated figures with headdress, jewelry and impressive robes. They are shown with their respective animal vehicles (Fu Dog / Fu Lions / Komainu and Elephant). The figures are set on a fluffy cloud with a dragon piercing through the lower left edge. This sculpture is a true masterpiece that will instantly become the focal point of any space. The sculpture was brought to American in the 1800s. It weighs Approximately 1000lbs. Due to its weight this piece requires a pallet jack or forklift for unloading and positioning.
