Description

Circa 1850's English Staffordshire porcelain flatback figurine in the shape of a Scottish Highlands harvesting couple with floral painted skirt and striped waistcoat, the woman carrying a bundle of sticks or straw on her head.

Staffordshire figures are a type of popular pottery figurine made in England from the 18th century onward and often described as important English folk art - "of the people, for the people". Most Staffordshire figures made from 1740 to 1900 were produced by small potteries and makers' marks are generally absent. Most Victorian figures (1837 to 1900) were designed to stand on a shelf or mantlepiece and are therefore only modelled and decorated where visible from the front and sides. These are known as 'flatbacks'.

The antique figurine shows a young couple, dressed in their Sunday best, heading to the farmers harvest celebration / Fair with their supplies for the day.
