Description
Early 20th century tobacco felt premium depicting the flag of Germany on a green background and trimmed with floral lace. Black beveled wood frame; green mat.
"Starting in about 1910 and lasting until the beginning of World War I, tobacco felts were a premium item used to promote / stimulate the sale of cigarettes. Premiums were not new, having first appeared in the late 19th century in the form of tags, cards, ribbons and related items. Both cigarettes and cigars featured premiums, sometimes included inside the package and other times attached via envelope to the outside. Some were redeemable for merchandise much in the way that Blue Chip stamps were marketed following World War II. As for tobacco felts — sometimes called silks or flannels — these came in a variety of sizes and themes. Among the most popular were flags of the world, collected by both smokers and non-smokers and often used in a variety of sewing crafts. Another sought-after grouping were college and university banners featuring many of the U.S.' most august institutions. Linear artwork and colorful prints were also introduced." (Source: Desert Sun)
