Lost Pairs" by Robert Wright, signed lower left, Acrylic on Canvas. Features Russian Figure Skaters with each grouping ishowing a moment in time.
Robert S.Wright (1952- ) is a 1976 BFA (painting) graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. He primarily studied with Victor Lara and Robert Hamilton. Another major artist who influenced was the Croatian sculptor Joseph Turkaly, whom was his high school art teacher (Gilmour Academy).
Wright focused primarily on figurative motion in his abstractions, starting with sitting in ballet classes at the Ohio State University in 1973. He developed a style based on calligraphic notations of the human form in motion which resembled Japanese calligraphy.
There are no primary movements or artists Wright is identified with. He was encouraged by seeing Brice Marden’s sketbooks to continue to develop his unique calligraphic notations, and developed several different painting styles including narrative, field, and tableau, finally ending with a unique take on visual culture using mixed media and acrylic paints. He has also painted in oils.
He has been a member of the Ohio Art League and has shown in a number of their fall and spring exhibitions. He showed in a number of Columbus art galleries from 1991-2004, primarily at the Lanning Gallery, which closed in 2004. He’s had numerous one man shows in Columbus, Dayton, and Cleveland, OH, as well as in Seattle, WA. He has participated in group shows nationally in several states.
Since 2014, he has been painting privately and focused on the female figure in water, obsessed with the Ophelia imagery, and doing over thirty paintings in a series.
His work has been purchased by several corporations, including Bank One (now Chase).
He lost most of his hearing at age 5 due to a streptomycin injection. He lives in Lancaster Ohio.
