Description

Early 20th century hand colored etching of "Canal de l'Yonne, France" by F. Roth. Shows a ferry crossing on the canlized river / waterway Yonn in France, lined with trees and cottages. Published by the Paris Etching society of New York, USA. Carved giltwood frame; tan mat.

"Francis Roth was born September 26, 1883 in Paris at 7 rue du Mont Cenis, and he lived at 6 rue St.-Rustique in Paris until his death on May 13, 1932 in an accident on the Senlis route while returning from sketching in Pierrefonds. He was a student of Bertrand Palissy from 1897-1901. He was an etcher/engraver of landscapes from 1905-1932 and exhibited with the French Artists Salon from 1925. His etchings were based on the watercolor paintings he made during his stays in the Jura Mountains, the Yonne, the Loiret, the Midi (Beaucaire), Brittany, Belgium, and in the region of Paris."
