Description

The Egyptian Ba-Bird sculpture is a wooden statue of a human-headed bird that may have been used in burials during the Ptolemaic and Late Periods. The sculpture is sometimes attached to a coffin or stelae. The Ba-Bird is said to represent the ba-soul, which is part of the Egyptian soul that can leave the tomb and travel between the afterlife and this world. The Ba-Bird is often shown hovering over the deceased's mummy, or entering or leaving the tomb at will. This beautiful example is hand carved from wood with polychrome finish. Circa 20th century.
