Mid to late 20th century German Westerwald salt glaze stoneware wall hanging plate / charger accented with deep charcoal and brown glaze, featuring a heraldic design in relief depicting an elaborate coat of arms festooned with plumed helmets, foliage, and the head of a jester flanked by the date 1588. Around this central motif is a decorative sunburst, patterned bands, and a garland of fruited swag and forest spirt / Green Man type faces. No maker's marks.

Typically, Westerwald pottery is decorated with cobalt blue painted designs, although some later examples are white. It may also be decorated with contrasting black or brown-purple designs.
