Description

Vintage Japanese doll pair depicting a Noh theater / play, "The Old Couple from Takasago" from the Taisho period (1912-26). The man's name is Jo and his wife is Uba. They symbolize long life and happiness with Jo raking in the good and Uba sweeping out the bad. This pair is quite beloved in Japan and representations of them are often given as wedding gifts. These dolls feature un-glazed porcelain / bisque heads and hands, painted features, bodies placed in set poses and dressed in sumptuously colored clothes. Between them is a small pond with a turtle, foliage, flowering tree, and crane. A small wood plaque is mounted in the front corner.
