Description
Pair of mid 1970’s abstract watercolor paintings by Gordon R. Richardson from his Stonehenge Series, one titled “Stonehenge Decoded.” These abstract works are executed in flowing oranges, blues, and browns, with a hint of metallic gold. Pencil signed lower right corner and titled on verso. Both paintings are enclosed between two sheets of plexiglass. These works are two of a series of 25 titled “After Stonehenge,” exhibited in 1979 at the Galerie Herouet in Paris. Richardson drew inspiration for this art from landscapes of specific geographic sites in the United States and Europe including Stonehenge in England, Carnac in Brittany, and Serpent Mound in Ohio. His paintings reflect his attempt to interpret these prehistoric designs.
Gordon R. Richardson graduated from the Dayton Art Institute school in 1964, spent 5 years teaching art in high schools, then took his master of fine arts in printmaking at Pratt Institute. He exhibited in Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York City, and Paris. Some of his pieces have been part of the Dayton Art Institute’s Circulating Gallery. He was a member of the University of Dayton’s visual arts faculty from 1970 to his death in 1990, at the age of 49.
