Description

An impressive mid 19th century French cast iron fireplace insert or surround. A deep concave form with ornate detail. The insert is centered by a chrysanthemum medallion and features venus fly catchers along the sides set within intertwined foliate. The insert is framed in a molding of egg and dart pattern. The egg and dart pattern was created by the ancient Greeks who alternated the egg shape with the arrow shape to symbolizes life and death.
