Description

Vintage German earthenware pottery stein featuring high relief form depicting a noble woman in a tower addressing a courtly knight on horse. Text reads: “Rebensaft u. Ritterliebe stammen aus edlen Trieben.” (Wine and knightly love come from noble impulses.) The theme of this stein is taken from an old German legend that tells of Gerda, the daughter of Count Diethelm of Rheinstein. Although Gerda shares a love with Helmbrecht, heir to Sternburg, Count Diethelm promises her hand in marriage to Hembrecht’s conniving uncle Gunzelin. However, fate smiles on the young lovers and Gunzelin has a fatal accident on his wedding day, allowing Gerda to marry Helmbrecht, her true love, and live happily ever after. The stein is tall, with a castle roof like flip top and pewter handle.
