Description

Vintage 1979 original orange and blue circular geometric supergraphic op art serigraph print by Brian Halsey titled “Novatron 3rd State” from the Mandalas suite of works, pencil signed by the artist.

“Brian Halsey designed and executed the six serigraphs which constitute this portfolio during the fall and winter of 1978-79. The artist hand cut the stencils for each image and mixed the colored inks utilized in the printing process. The prints were executed at Vistec Graphics, Ltd. (Rochester, N.Y.) under the supervision of Master Printer Chuck Baylis. The Vistec Chop appears along with the © Copyright to the right of the artists signature on each print.

Each image in Mandalas was printed on Somerset 100% rag, English-made paper (300 Grs.) and was trimmed to 21 ½ by 21 inches. The suite has been issued in three separate color states designated as portfolios A, B, and C. Portfolio A consists of the first color state of each image, portfolio B contains the second color state and portfolio C the third.

The artist has signed each print. All stencils and screens employed in the creation of this suite were destroyed. The artist and publisher have reserved all reproduction rights. The facts of publication as stated here are attested to on the right by the artist, Brian Halsey, and the publisher, Albert Scaglione.

Images in the Portfolio consist of: Deltron, Nuclead, Trinovem, Trion, Novatron and Triaxon. Brian Halsey was born in Kendallville Indiana in 1942. He studied art at Wheaton College in Illinois where he graduated magna cum laude, Chicago Art Institute, and Michigan State University where he also graduated magna cum laude. He holds an M.A. degree in Church History and the Creative Arts. In 1969 was awarded a United States Steel Fellowship scholarship to study at Florida State University from where he graduated in 1972 with a Ph.D. in Humanities. His thesis was entitled Paul Gauguin: a study of the Christ theme in his art and thought. Additional study included research and studio art study in London, Paris, Holland, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

At the height of his career (late 1970s), Halsey was creating serigraphs and acrylic paintings that according to him were his endeavor to “visualize an ideal”. The pieces represent the Trinity and often involve “emanating light in ordered structures, suspended in deep space,” an attempt to point to cosmic order through mathematics. Unlike many artists, Halsey was totally involved with the print making process from mixing his own inks, to cutting all stencils and often physically printing many of his own editions.

Halsey taught art at Spring Arbor College in the 1970s, helping to establish their art program. He took a sabbatical in 1975 to fully concentrate on his art, devoting his career full time to painting and printmaking.

After 1978, Halsey worked primarily as an artist and print maker. He is most well-known for his hard-edged three-dimensional serigraphs. Since the mid-1980s, Halsey has served as an art consultant to design firms, businesses and hospitals. In 2006 he returned to Spring Arbor University to display his art, and at that time he was living in Dexter Michigan with his wife and children and was still working as an artist, “developing images that combine mixed media techniques, computer imaging and ink jet printing.”

Halsey is the recipient of awards and distinctions including recognition from: Society of American Graphics Artists, National Academy of Design, Pratt Graphic Center International Print Exhibition, Los Angeles Printmaking Society, Print Club Galleries in Philadelphia PA, and the Metropolitan Museum and Art Center in New York, and has enjoyed exhibitions including one man shows at National Academy of Design, N.Y.; Pratt Graphic Center, N.Y.; Metropolitan Museum and Art Center; and other venues. His work is collected in public and private corporations and museums including: Arthur Anderson Co.; Westinghouse Electric, Pittsburgh PA, Ford Motor Co., Dearborn, MI; Bank of America Corp., San Francisco, CA.; I.B.M. New York, N.Y.; Sun Bank of Florida; United States Steel Foundation, Pittsburgh, PA; Prudential Insurance Co., Houston, TX; National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Brooklyn Museum of Art; Denver Art Museum; Detroit Institute of Arts; Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco; Grunwald Center for Graphic Arts, University of California; Norton Gallery, West Palm Beach Florida; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Minneapolis Institute of Arts; Baltimore Museum of Art; Phoenix Art Museum; Indianapolis Museum of Art; McNay Art Institute, San Antonio, TX; The National Collection of Fine Arts, Smithsonian Institute, Washington D.C.; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y.; and National Museum of Modern Art Kyoto, Japan.”
