Antique Japanese Bugaku or Noh Mask, Late 19th Century Antique Japanese Bugaku mask of an old man laughing. The mask is made of wood and lacquer. Hand painted and signed on the inside. Japan, late Edo or early Meiji period. The character is known as Heishitori or wine bearer, in the dance Kotokuraku. These masks were often used in theater (Gigaku) at Shinto festivals.
