Lend graphic abstract expressionism and a bit of color to your decor with this striking, mixed media drawing by American artist, Barbara "Mari" Berkman. Features Flamenco dancers and a picador (bullfighter). The oil is painted on canvas with some mixed media composition. Signed lower right.

Mari is the name Barbara Mari Berkaman uses to paint vivid, impressionistic representations. Her favorite subject matter is people.

"I believe the human figure offers the greatest challenge to an artist. The range of symbolism and expression it offers is infinite, inexhaustible.

The Chicago born artist studied at the Chicago Art Institute. Tafflinger School of Art in Indianapolis under Jose Alvarez in Mexico City.

In Indianapolis she was taught the famous George Bridgeman method of figure drawing by Tafflinger who had been his student.

"Yet I do not confine myself to painting just people. That is like eating nothing but mashed potatoes. I am highly experimental and prefer to move freely from one subject to another. Confinement to one technique and one subject stultifies the artists growth.

She hold the Best of Show award in figure painting from the Young Midwest Artists Show, Wayne University in Detroit. Her works have been included in the Young Chicago Artists Exhibit at Charles Stevens & Co., Chicago at the William H. Bloch and Lieber Galleries in Indianapolis and selected for show at the Indiana State Fair.

Paintings bearing the Mari signature have been acclaimed for their versatile approach to the subject and her unorthodox use of color.
