Description

An exceptional Jacobean style Court Cupboard, Circa 1920s. Features a tall case with upper hutch between robust turned baluster supports and scrolled spandrels. Upper apron has fluted paneling in a linen fold manner. Below is a large central dovetailed drawer and lower cabinet for accessory storage. Lower doors are carved with rope twist design and foliate scrolling. The cabinet is supported by turned bun feet.

A Jacobean court cupboard is a type of buffet that was used to display plates and other dinnerware. It is a short, three-tiered sideboard that was popular in the 16th and 17th centuries, especially in northern Europe. Jacobean style furniture is similar to the Elizabethan era, with sturdy, massive furniture that features perpendicular designs. Jacobean furniture is often richly carved, decorated with classical-inspired details like scrolls, columns, arches, and intricate geometric designs. Jacobean furniture was mainly made from oak and made use of mortise-and-tenon joints.
