Maternité au Centaure
Marc Chagall (1887 - 1985)
In the captivating Chagall Maternité au Centaure, 1957 , Chagall depicts Chiron, a Greek centaur considered a father figure to many of gods’ children. In this work, Chiron is seen watching over a mother and her child in their town. Chiron is highlighted in brilliant shades of blue which meander from deep blue to a lighter, sky blue. Chiron plays an instrument as the mother and child look on. The mother is rendered in delicate flowing lines with a more maternal coloring of warm pinks. Both she and Chiron have gently curving bodies, which give them grace and motion. Their bodies curve in the same direction, making them appear in sync and giving the composition balance. Some of the town is detailed in the background, with a church painted a bright green, bringing a further element of life to the lithograph. The touches of vibrant color that Chagall uses to finish his lithograph have depth and complexity, and are used to breath life into an already wondrous composition in the way that only Chagall can do.
Created in 1957, this color lithograph is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 – Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right and is numbered from the edition of 90 in pencil in the lower left.
